Have a think about how you currently make purchases… You’d be familiar with paying via cash at your local market. You’d also be familiar paying by HandyCard perhaps at your local trade store or one of the larger supermarkets.

Not all businesses are alike. Some businesses are now looking to let you pay for goods and services online with your Debit/Credit Card (such as government services, utilities, lenders, insurance, and so on).

If you want to start making online purchases and don’t have a Debit/Credit card – please contact your bank. Currently, almost anyone who holds an active bank account in PNG qualifies for a more secure and convenient Debit/Credit Card.

Handy tips to get started

Most business which accept online payments will ask you to start by creating an account.

As part of the account creation process, a business will typically ask you to enter some personal details about yourself such as your name, address, email address, and phone number. Depending on the business, they may also request that you provide more or different information.

Add items to your virtual shopping basket or cart as you shop.

When you find a product in the Store that you wish to purchase, you should add that item to your Shopping Cart. Select the product, type in the quantity you want to order, and click on the Add to Cart button. This sends the product(s) to your Shopping Cart. You may then continue to shop for other products. View the content of your Shopping Cart by hovering over View Cart at the top right of the screen. The cart view expands and displays up to 5 products, their individual prices, and options to either See Full Cart or Checkout.

Click on See Full Cart to view the details of your Shopping Cart, or to add or delete items. To change the quantity of an item while in the Shopping Cart, type in the new quantity and click on the Update button. If you want to remove an item, click on Delete, to the right of the product. To delete all the items in your Shopping Cart, click on the Remove All.

Please Note: The subtotal at the bottom of the Shopping Cart does not include shipping and handling charges.

When you’re finished shopping and you’re ready to pay, click on the bag or trolley icon (often in the top right-hand corner of the web page).

You will be prompted to provide your name, address, contact telephone number and email address.

If you have already provided this information during the “Create an account” process, you may instead be asked to double check the contact details provided to ensure they are still correct.

Either way, you will need to provide or double check all the details highlighted or marked with an asterisk before being able to proceed with the purchase.

Enter the name on the front of the card, the 16-digit card number, the expiry and the CVV number.

Check your purchase amount again before submitting payment, keeping in mind that shipping costs and other fees may have been added during this step.

Once checked, press the “confirm & make payment” button to submit your payment. Remember not to hit the button more than once while you’re waiting for the payment confirmation page to load otherwise you may end up getting charged twice.

Note that any potential credit card fees that your credit card provider may charge will not be displayed here.

If your card has Verified by Visa, Mastercard SecureCode as a security feature, you may be asked to enter a password, answer a security question or type in a one-time code that would be sent to your mobile phone before the payment can be completed.

Most online stores will email you a tax invoice you can save and print.

You can also print the confirmed payment web page if you prefer. These details will help you track your order and make sure the correct amount is charged to your card.

You’ll also need the proof of your purchase to dispute the transaction if you don’t get what you paid for. Speak to your bank directly if you believe you have been charged incorrectly or if you find a mistake on your credit card statement.
